Zenda Scrapbook
Originally the inhabitants of the hamlet of Zenda wanted their community to be known as Boswell. However, the name was already taken. Charles Banbury, the first postmaster, then suggested “Zenda” after reading the book “The Prisoner of Zenda” by Anthony Hope.
In 1937, as part of a publicity stunt concocted by the producers of the motion picture “The Prisoner of Zenda”, a dozen residents from the Hamlet of Zenda, located in Oxford County, were flown to New York City for the premiere. Upon their return, they were considered local celebrities and were invited to attend the movie’s opening across the region.
