Kate “Kitty” Lloyd (b. 1885)

Kate came through Barnardo’s to Hazelbrae in Peterborough, Ontario. She sailed on the Sardinian and arrived in Quebec on September 15, 1895.

She was at Barnardo’s Girls’ Village Home, Curling Cottage, Clifford, England before she left for Canada. 

The October 1898 Edition of Ups and Downs mention her: “Kitty Lloyd (1895). This is a good home, and Kitty seems to be happy there. She looked brighter and better than on my former visit. Mrs. and Miss K always speak well of the child. Kitty attended school during the winter.”

In the 1901 census, Kate is listed as a servant living with John H. Kellett, Francis and Frances Kellett in Dereham Township. The church she mentions in her letter below, is St. Charles Anglican Church.

This letter was written by Kate for the May 1902 Ups and Downs:

“Dear Girls, I came out to Canada in September, 1894, so that was quite a long time ago, you know. I stayed at the Home [Hazelbrae, Peterborough, Ontario] about a month, and then went to live with a lady in Picton, and stayed there until the spring, and on the 13th of May I came to Tilsonburg, and here I have lived ever since, and it will be six years in May. I am living on a farm, and it is two miles and a half from town, and it is 100 acres of land, and the nicest land and the prettiest planned place I ever saw. The garden in the summer time is beautiful: it has a large lawn and such lots of evergreens. They are kept trimmed, and we have the loveliest flowers: the roses are just beautiful. I have never written to UPS AND DOWNS before, and I have so much to tell that I am afraid it will take up too much room. I want to tell you all about my joining the Church of England. I was confirmed the 16th of last May by the Bishop of Huron, and the same day the church was consecrated, and my mistress’ father gave most of the land and quite a sum of money. It was the first church that was ever built in this part of the country. It had been fixed over and was consecrated again, and now it is like a new one. I go to church every Sunday. I look forward to the UPS AND DOWNS coming. I like to read the letters in it. I like Canada very much.
