Martha “Mattie” Emerson Young (1885-1981)

Mattie came through Barnardo’s to Hazelbrae in Peterborough, Ontario. She sailed on the Labrador and arrived in Quebec on October 2, 1897. One of the placements Martha had was with Joseph N. Miller (1879-1937) of Tillsonburg. She married Milo Young (1884-1957) in Tillsonburg in 1904. Martha and Milo had three children, Lawrence, Kenneth and Marjorie. Milo and Mattie moved to the United States in the 1920s and stayed there for the rest of their lives.

Martha's name appears second of the UK and Ireland, Outward Passenger List and first on the Canada, Incoming Passenger List. She is listed as 11 years old when she arrives in Canada. 

The 1901 Census lists Martha as Mattie, along with Joseph N. Miller's family. 

Martha was mentioned in the 1901 edition of Ups and Downs:

“Martha Emerson is a clever, well-grown, capable girl, enjoying her life and surroundings, and giving promise of a bright, clever womanhood.”

Martha was also mentioned in the 1903 edition of Ups and Downs:

“Martha Emerson is one of our elder girls, and is very happy in her present home, which she feels is so much her own.”
