William John Gale (born 1882)

William John Gale came through Barnardo’s to the Toronto distributing home. He sailed on the Scotsman and arrived in Quebec on October 17, 1896. He married Ethel Maud Gray (1883-1946) on August 24, 1906. They were living in South Norwich Township, R. R. #3 Tillsonburg in the 1920s and 1930s and William is listed as both a carpenter and farmer in the census. 

William's name appears as the 22nd person both the UK and Ireland, Outward Passenger List and the Canada, Incoming Passenger Lists. 

This report is from Ups and Downs July 1899:

… “Getting along splendidly, very willing, takes a great interest in his work and is learning fast,” was the report received from Mrs. N. Butler, South Norwich, of William J. Gale, aged sixteen who came to this address in June, 1897. Judging from what he can do, he has made remarkable progress in the art of agriculture.

William was featured in the 1900 edition of Ups and Downs:

“William John Gale has had anything but a stormy experience since coming to Canada, although he has managed to “raise the wind” for two bicycles. While this it not intended as a “puff” for William, he should not be inflated with pride when I say that should we wish to “blow our own horn,” we have only to point to him as an evidence of the success of this phase of Dr. Barnardo’s work.”
