John Harrington, East Zorra
John Harrington was born on 6 February 1789, in Shaftsbury, Bennington, Vermont, United States. He married Lovina Sherman in 1815, in Oswego, Oswego, New York, United States and would eventually immigrate to Canada, settling in East Zorra Township. In 1841, he married Sarah Karn.
He was Oxford County’s representative in the 1st Parliament of United Canada. In addition, he would serve as Reeve of East Zorra Township from 1850-1869 and was elected Warden in 1860. He died on December 6, 1880, at the age of 91, and was buried at the Woodstock Presbyterian Cemetery.
The village of Harrington was named in his honour by Sir Francis Hincks, although he never lived in the community.
