1880: A.L. Wilcox
A.L. Wilcox, South Norwich
Born in Essex County, New York, United States in 1826, Ambrose Loomis Wilcox settled in Springford, Ontario where he was a dealer in dry goods, groceries, and crockery, as well as a manufacturer of clothing, which was later known as A.L. Wilcox & Co. He also took an active part in temperance work, being an ardent advocate of Prohibition.
One of the most prominent reformers in South Oxford, he served as Deputy Reeve for South Norwich Township from 1866-1868 and again in 1872. He served as Reeve from 1873-1881 and was elected as County Warden in 1880.
A.L. Wilcox passed away, from typhoid fever, on October 15, 1887 and is buried at the Springford Community Cemetery. At the time of his death he was employed as a traveler for Penchon, Vaughen & Co., Toronto.
