1904: Thomas Lockhart

Thomas Lockhart, East Zorra, East Oxford

Born in Peterborough, Ontario in 1847, Thomas Lockart arrived in Oxford County four years later with his family, settling on the 16th Line East Zorra Township. He would later attend business school in Toronto, for a year, before attending Woodstock College.

He took a keen interest in municipal politics and served as a member of the East Zorra Township Council for a number of years. From 1901-1904 he served as County Councillor for Division No. 6 East Zorra and East Oxford, and in 1904, was elected Warden of the County of Oxford. He also served as an Auditor for the Township.

He was a president of the Farmers’ Fire Insurance Company of Bright and a member of the 16th Line Baptist Church for over forty years. In addition, he was elected president of the North Oxford Liberal Association around 1908.

Thomas Lockhart passed away in Mossey River, Manitoba on August 8, 1917 and is buried in the Innerkip Cemetery.
