1923: George H. Hollier
George H. Hollier, Tillsonburg
Born in Wales, England on August 18, 1877, George H. Hollier arrived in Canada in 1894 and settled in Tillsonburg in 1897, where he would operate a successful automobile and garage business.
He was first elected to town council in 1913, and served as Reeve from 1915-1916. In the fall of 1916, he went overseas as Captain and Quartermaster of the 168th Battalion. While overseas he attained the rank of Major. He was demobilized in 1919 and returned to Tillsonburg where he would once again serve as Reeve from 1921-1923. In 1923, he was elected County Warden on the first ballot. In 1938, he once again served as Reeve for the Town.
An active member of the community, he served for years on the board of directors of the Tillsonburg Agricultural Society and served on the Tillsonburg School Board for a decade. He was a Past Master of King Hiram Lodge, A.F. & A.M. and a charter member of Ashlar Lodge No. 701.
A member of the Great War Veterans’ Association, he was instrumental in forming a branch of the Canadian Legion in Tillsonburg and served as its second president. G.H. Hollier passed away on November 8, 1972 at Westminster Hospital in London, Ontario, at the age of ninety-five, and is buried in the Tillsonburg Cemetery.
