Robert Rudy, Tavistock
Robert Rudy was born on June 2, 1909 in Tavistock, Ontario. He purchased a lumber building supplies and fuel business from Henry Schlemmer, which became known as the firm R. Rudy Ltd.
Heavily involved in the community, Robert was a charter member of the Tavistock Men’s Club and Board of Trade, where he held positions of both President and Treasurer. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Tavistock Agricultural Society from 1936-1972 and was Secretary-Treasurer of the Tavistock Recreation Commission. In addition, he served for more than thirty years as Secretary-Treasurer of the Tavistock Union Cheese and Butter Company.
He began his political career in 1940 when he was elected to Village Council. He served as a Councillor for Tavistock for seventeen years. He was elected Tavistock Reeve in 1948 and held that position until 1963. He was elected Warden in January 1950 on the 35th ballot. In 1963 he was elected to the position of Clerk-Treasurer for the Village.
Robert passed away on July 10, 1972 at the age of sixty-three.
