James Hossack, Embro
James Donald Hossack was born on February 4, 1902 on the farm of his grandfather on Lot 9, Concession 14 in East Nissouri Township. James would also take up farming on the Town Line between West Zorra and East Nissouri Townships (Lot 9, Concession 13). During WWII, he was employed for two years in war work at Camp Ipperwash. In addition, he was employed by the Oxford Farmers Co-operative at Embro for seven years and was employed with the Wallace Lumber Company, also at Embro, for thirteen years.
He served as a member of the Embro Council as Reeve from 1951-1954 and was elected County Warden in 1954 on the 11th ballot.
James was actively involved in his community. He was a member of the Knox Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Board of Managers. He was also congregational secretary from 1953-1969. In addition, he served on the Embro School Board, where he served as chairman for six years, and in 1952, he served as President of the Zorra Caledonian Society. He would serve as Executive Officer of the Highland Games Association of Ontario, was a member of the Embro Library Board, and in 1976, was appointed curator of the Pioneer Village at Fanshawe.
Mr. Hossack was a Past Noble Grand of Embro Star Lodge No. 229, I.O.O.F, served as Treasurer from 1952-1970, and received his 25-year jewel in February 1970. He passed away in 1970 and is buried in the North Embro Cemetery.
