Canadian Archival Records Search

As of December 15, 2025, Canada passed Bill C-3, amending the Citizenship Act to abolish the strict "first-generation limit" for citizenship by descent, thereby fundamentally changing how citizenship can be passed down through generations.

In doing so, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) require official, certified documents for confirming Canadian ancestry. Such records include:

  • Birth or Baptismal Certificates
  • Marriage Certificates
  • Supporting Evidence, including Death certificates, census date, and property records
  • Proof of Parent’s Citizenship (ie. Canadian passport, citizenship certificate, or birth certificate)

In Ontario, it was not mandatory to have birth, marriage, death, or baptismal records until 1869. Before then, such records, if created were held by the individual church or parishes. Oxford County Archives only maintains a few vital statistics records prior to 1869, though staff are happy to assist in tracking down records needed as part of the application process. We do maintain other records, such as land abstracts, land deeds, poll books, voter lists, and school information, that may be considered as supporting evidence for the application process. Please contact Archives Staff for further information on research services and fees: archives@oxfordcounty.ca

In terms of birth certificates, baptismal records, and marriage certificates, the following Archival institutions may have records in their holdings to assist with your research:

Please note that due to the massive increase in requests institutions may have a long wait list and may take several weeks or months to complete your request.
